ALIGNMENT OPPORTUNITY

When I first began this work, I didn’t want to admit I was the kind of person who not only craved but also needed validation in order to take action or continue moving forward. I thought I was stronger than that. I thought I knew better. Ha! Joke was on me. But then I did this exercise and my beautiful, hot-pink bubble burst. Let’s do it together now:

Think back to the last time you asked someone for their opinion.

When that person gave you their opinion, and it wasn’t as positive as you expected, how did you feel? Were you surprised, disappointed, sad? Maybe you felt irritated, misunderstood, confused?

If your emotions were in the vein of negativity, it’s a good indication that you weren’t seeking feedback or even encouragement. Nope, you were seeking validation.

If you could redo that experience, what are some metrics for verification you could have put in place instead of simply asking for feedback/opinions? (For example: ask the person to answer a specific question, create a specific time frame, or offer multiple-choice options.)
